To me this is important! I always scan my paintings with a heavy book on top, to minimise all the ripples from buckled paper. My new scanner though, is a little too efficient; showing all the pulp and tooth of the paper (as the light from the scanner hits it)
So two scans, one on the left has a black book weighing down the page, one on the right a white book. White wins. more contrast, closer to the original, easier to correct in Photoshop with a click and nod.
